I photographed the mother and calf above over two days, on a riverbank in Yellowstone National Park. It was a thrill to see them, but also a reminder of the brutal reality of the natural world. There were two mothers and two calves the first evening I spotted them. When I went back the next morning, I found two mothers but only one calf, the one shown here. The calves were much too young to be away from their mothers, so I could only guess that some predator—either a grizzly or a wolf—had killed the other during the night.
