Caribou #3
I photographed Caribou in August 2004, on the coastal plain the still-pristine Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. It was the thrill of a lifetime to see them, and also a poignant reminder that this beautiful place is the #1 target of the oil and gas industry and the politicians who are in cahoots with them. Don't believe anybody who tells you that the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is "just a wasteland." It is not!

The images above are of bull Caribou, and I saw hundreds of them. Equally numerous were the females with calves that we saw all along the banks of the Canning River. The calves had been born in June, so they were not yet two months old. I had my camera and long lens stashed away for safety while rafting the river, so I made no images of the mothers and babies.

In the "Nature's Details" section of my website, you'll find close-ups of the wildflowers I photographed on the tundra that August.
